Project description

Images are of the “Flying Kites” exhibit at New York’s Hallmark Gallery in 1968 to promote James Wagenvoord’s book of the same name. The exhibit displayed 200 kites tracing the 3,000-year-old history of kite making. Included in the exhibit were a set of paper kites from India, supplied by Charles Eames. Eames would later contribute these kites to Michael’s City Hall display to promote the first Great Boston Kite Festival.

Special thanks to artist Darrah Bowden for her research, enabling us to identify many of the GBKF-related images in the collection.
